Christopher McCandless

After initially writing the essay my opinion has not changed. I believe Chris McCandless was stupid for going into the wild because he did not have the proper equipment to survive in the wild. I can understand how he wanted to get away from the materialistic world; however, in today's society in order to survive in the world you need money. No matter what someone does in the world it involves money. I respect his enthusiasm for the wild because it is a beautiful place and it is totally different from the real world. I, however, do not respect his decision to run away from his family without a word. I just feel the execution of his idea to go into the wild was stupid and that there were better ideas of how to approach the wild. Maybe as the book continues on, I will be able to get a better understanding of McCandless and his exact notations of going into the wild.

  1. I agree that McCandless was naive and ignorant, but I believe he knew he was being stubborn. He knew very well that he may not come back from his journey. McCandless thought it was more important to go into the wild with no connection with society than to enter the Alaskan wilderness with material goods. He would rather die independent and free then rely anyone's help.

  2. I can relate to your point of view, yes it was stupid for McCandless to go into the wild without any proper equipment. However, you have to acknowledge that McCandless was different from both his peers and society today. He knew what he was doing and was aware of his decisions. It was his dream to go into the wild without the help of others and survive. While I dislike the way McCandless treated his family, I admire him for pursuing his dreams. Many people die without ever attempting to follow their dreams, McCandless was not one of them.

  3. i disagree with your argument. Chris has a story that nobody has. he didn't follow the same boring path that everyone else in the world follows, he followed his heart and took his own path. i can agree with you in the point you make about equipment. he should have prepared a lot better so that he could have survived. maybe he didn't want to survive though; he could have just wanted to be in the wild with his literature and if he didn't come out he was ok with that. i think that as we read on our opinions wont change. the reason he left was because of his parents. they were too materialistic and thought that giving their kids things was loving them.
